after many attempts to resist michelle ng’s begging and pleading(even bribing…how low)*, I, for the sake of being a sucker for all things ultimate, folded and am now writing (use that word loosely) a blog. what this blog will mainly consist of is gramatical and punctual errors(there is no squiggly red line, wordpress should reevaluate that situation) and hopefully a fairly accurate and sometimes comedic account of our season of cleated ultimate. so on that note i will start with who i play for: UNC-Wilmington, no we are not a satelite school of UNC, but im pretty sure we have one in mount olive, which in fact is the pickle capital of the US (fact?). we are a kind of medium sized school on the coast of north carolina, our mascot is a made up animal and it takes approximately 8 minutes to get to the beach from campus. in my exceptionally biased opinion, there is no better place to go to college, or to play ultimate. “wilmington? really? i’ve heard about you guys…” well one blog, tweet, post and tournament at a time, i will do my best to make you reevaluate your opinion, in the least biased way possible**
it is now day two of the college regular season and i’d be lying if said i hadn’t been waiting for this since last nationals when we lost in quarters to wisco. i’d also be lying if i said i didnt think about that game an unhealthy amount since then. but that recap is for another blog from another season, that recap is for the past, we’re a different team now. a better team, in my amatuer opinion. watching players who didnt get more than 3 or 4 points of playing time at nattys become the reason for our not-too-shabby fall is incredible. to see my co-captain transition from catching every goal to throwing every goal is…also…incredible (wordpress doesnt have a thesaurus either). but here we are, not having played a real tournament since CCC, not having practiced since finals week and god knows when i saw a teammate last–this florida retirement community(where this post is being written from) has gotten the best of me. so we, as every competitive team in college ultimate on the verge of the spring season, have a choice: take the easy road: work like you did in the fall, drink a little more beer, and make regionals or take the hard road: work twice as hard as you did in the fall, drink a little less beer, and make nationals…..
or run the marathon, up the mountain, carrying your turnovers from the fall(mine would probably equate to my dog, who is about 60lbs of beauty which i consider a heavy amount): work four times as hard as you did in the fall, drink very minimal amounts of beer***, and win nationals. there are a number of other things you can do but for the sake of making this a little interesting, lump them in the category of working harder than the fall.
so what will we do? well i guess this is what a blog is for, so i can hook you by asking this pressing question then write more riveting posts about our quest to boulder. yahtzee!
*michelle ng never did these things, so dont fire her USAU
**i am biased, always. the key here is least biased
***it is proven that those who drink are happier. it is also proven that those who excercise are happier. just sayin.
