I’m dedicating this post to GM because she always calls me out for my mid-day writings. Well maybe I’m taking my “lunch break” at 9:30am!
Melee memories. Remember that time…
* Michelle played on a dislocated femur
* We beat UW at nationals
* Janel ran into Nelly on the pull (I’m the only one that saw that happen. It was probably the best moment of my life up to that point)
* Priya broke her arm
* We won the south region. Twice.
* Marjo paid for our dinner in San Diego. nomnomnom
* The Enterprise guy gave Libby his phone number
* We played in ice on turf
* We stayed at “The Warehouse” for harvest
* Half the team got stranded in Atlanta. Sky Team represent!
* Lola decided to trade bags with a stranger at the Jacksonville airport
* Sheeple
Then there are the things that you don’t even have to describe. It goes without fail, years later, Janel and I can be talking and say “Remember that time BS…” and not even finish the sentence before the other is in complete aw. Yes. Yes we do remember the time BS did the impossible. It was at pres day two years ago. When she ran the full length of the field, laid out with a giant right on her back, and a little (and I mean LITTLE) hand pops up from the tangled mess holding the disc. Get Janel to tell you the story.
But the one that every single person on melee knows, the one that we still compare all of our past present and future misery to, the ultimate “remember the time” is…..
Remember that time at Pres Day?
The whole team groans. Everyone. The n00bs groan because they are tired of hearing it. The vets groan because we remember how horrible it was. Cold. Rain. Wind. So much water and wind that there was a current in the field. So cold that Eventually the story will include a tornado and killer birds. It was just that bad.
But this year? This year I keep looking at the weather and thinking… It won’t be that bad. This year I have a sexy Patagonia rain jacket and heat gear and the smarts to know that its not worth laying out in freezing water because 1) it’s going to be cold and 2) you aren’t going to catch it.
So to repeat what I said two years ago standing on the line in what was honestly the coldest moment of my life…
Just remember. We’re making memories.
Pres Day here we come!
