Betsy Calkins (Brute Squad)- Betsy started her ultimate career with the University of Wisconsin Bella Donna, qualifying for nationals in 2003. During college she played for the Madison Women’s Club team, Madison Jazz. Upon graduation, she moved to Boston and has been playing for Brute Squad for the past eight years, qualifying for Club Nationals eight times including several semis appearances and one silver medal finish. She also helped bring Brute Squad to a fourth place finish at Worlds in Prague in 2010.
Brett Matzuka (Ring of Fire)- Brett is a multiple-time Nationals Qualifier with both NC State and Ring of Fire, including a Semifinals appearance with Ring in 2012. He has attended multiple WUGC and WUCC events, and won Beach Worlds with Team USA in 2010. He was also an alternate for the USA World Games Team. His arsenal of throws and athleticism make him one of the best handlers in the open division. We are honored to have Brett as a coach at Layouts for the third year in a row!
Chelsea Murphy (Ozone)– Chelsea has 12 years of ultimate frisbee experience and currently plays for Bucket in Atlanta, GA. Starting her career in middle school , she was a co-captain of her 8th grade travel team, a co-captain of Amherst High School’s Varsity team, and co-captain of her college team Emory Luna her junior and senior years. She was a member of the 2006 Jr. Worlds Team and an All-Region selection in 2009 and 2010. She is a one-time College Nationals Qualifier with Emory Luna, and a four-time Club Nationals Qualifier with Bucket and Ozone.
Christian Foster (Ironside)– Christian has competed at the highest levels of ultimate as a member of the Amherst Regional High School Team, Jr. Worlds team, Carleton CUT, Bodhi, and now Ironside. He is a two-time College National Champion and founding member of Bodhi, a team he led to Nationals in its inaugural season. He has played the last three seasons with Ironside, and this year, he is helping to coach the Northeastern University men’s team. Christian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Layouts coaching team.
Jessi Jones (Phoenix)– Jessi captained NC State for two seasons and is a veteran of Phoenix. She will be captaining the team for the 2014 season. She finished second at YCCs as a youth player and also played a key role in Phoenix’s semifinals run in 2011. Jessi is known for her huge hucks and outstanding play on both sides of the disc. She was also a member of the USA U-23 Women’s Team who brought home a gold medal last year. We are extremely happy to have her return as a coach for Layouts this year!
Jinny Eun (Ozone)– Jinny is a veteran of our sport. She played this past season with Atlanta Ozone after a multi-year stint with Seattle Riot. She played her college years with Carleton College Syzygy and coached Western Washington University Chaos while she lived in Seattle. She now lives in the Triangle Area and helps coach Duke University Swerve.
Rachel Johnson (Phoenix)– Rojo played for Ole Miss for four years before taking her talents to Elon University. Upon graduation, she began playing for the North Carolina women’s team Phoenix. She is a dominant cutter and defender for the team. She is also involved with the youth girls’ leadership program Take The Field.
