Melissa Gannon (Phoenix)– Melissa is former captain of NC State and a 3-year veteran on Phoenix. She is an O-line cutter whose consistency and endurance make her a dangerous threat. Melissa was recently selected to participate in the U-23 World Ultimate Championship tryouts.
Chelsea Murphy (Ozone)– Chelsea has 12 years of ultimate frisbee experience and currently plays for Ozone in Atlanta, GA. Starting her career in middle school , she was a co-captain of her 8th grade travel team, a co-captain of Amherst High School’s Varsity team, and co-captain of her college team Emory Luna her junior and senior years. She was a member of the 2006 Jr. Worlds Team and an All-Region selection in 2009 and 2010. She is a one-time College Nationals Qualifier with Emory Luna, and a four-time Club Nationals Qualifier with Bucket and Ozone.
Christian Foster (Ironside)– Christian has competed at the highest levels of ultimate as a member of the Amherst Regional High School Team, Jr. Worlds team, Carleton CUT, Bodhi, and now Ironside. He is a two-time College National Champion and founding member of Bodhi, a team he led to Nationals in its inaugural season. He has played the last two seasons with Ironside, and this year, he is helping to coach the Northeastern University men’s team. Christian brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Layouts coaching team.
Brian Dobyns (Various)– Brian is nothing short of being an ultimate legend. He is a National Champion in the Mixed and Masters divisions, and co-coached UNC-Chapel Hill Pleiades. He has played a formative role in North Carolina ultimate, and is one of the best players, coaches, and thinkers in the sport. We are glad to have him returning for 2013!
Katy Harris (Phoenix)– Katy has been playing ultimate for over a dozen years, including eight seasons with Backhoe. She now plays with North Carolina Phoenix. She was a Nationals Quarterfinalist in college, a Nationals Finalist with Backhoe, and led Phoenix to Semifinals in 2011. Off the field, she has a M.S. in Public Health in Health Policy and Management from UNC-Chapel Hill. She has worked as a full-time personal trainer, a research assistant doing visual brain mapping, and as a Certified Nutrition Specialist. We are glad that Katy will be joining us at Layouts again this season.
Amy Hudson (Scandal)- Amy started playing Ultimate at the University of Maryland in 2005. She attended College Nationals with them as a player in 2008 and 2010 and then moved on as assistant coach to UMD’s Helpful Corn from 2011 to 2012. Amy played on the mixed team Dumpsterfire for 2 years, and has just finished her 2nd year with the D.C. women’s team Scandal. She has also received the Spirit of the Game Award twice in her ultimate career.
Judy Winglee (Phoenix)– Judy has played ultimate on a number of high-level teams at both the college and club levels. She played for Tufts Ewo, qualifying for College Nationals in both 2006 and 2007. She then joined Lady Godiva, qualifying for Nationals with them once, before a short stint in coed. She played with Quiet Coyote, tying for 3rd with them at Worlds in 2010, and played two seasons with District 5, making Finals of Nationals in 2010 and tying for 3rd at Nationals in 2011. She played this past season with North Carolina’s Phoenix, again qualifying for Nationals. Judy is a speedy defender, known for her versatility and ability to generate quick movement as both a cutter and a handler.
Steve Meyer (Haymaker)- Steve Meyer has been an active member of the ultimate community in the Midwest for many years. He helped build the Truman State University team and has run many events in the Midwest including Glory Days, Chicago Heavyweights, and various USA Ultimate Series events. Steve currently plays for Chicago Haymaker as well as the Detroit Mechanix, and has played for mixed powerhouse CLX in the past. In his spare time, he is the Director of SUN Ultimate, an ultimate-based non-profit, as well Director of Operations for VC Ultimate’s new US-based office in Chicago.
Jessi Jones (Phoenix)– Jessi captained NC State for two seasons and is a veteran of Phoenix. She finished second at YCCs as a youth player and also played a key role in Phoenix’s semifinals run in 2011. Jessi is known for her huge hucks and outstanding play on both sides of the disc. She was also recently selected for the U-23 World Ultimate Championship tryouts. We are extremely happy to have her return as a coach for Layouts this year!
Brett Matzuka (Ring of Fire)- Brett is a multiple-time Nationals Qualifier with both NC State and Ring of Fire, including a Semifinals appearance with Ring in 2012. He has attended multiple WUGC and WUCC events, and won Beach Worlds with Team USA in 2010. His arsenal of throws and athleticism make him one of the best handlers in the open division. We are honored to have Brett as a coach at Layouts for the second year in a row!
Rachel Bradshaw (Riot)– Rachel just finished her first season with Seattle Riot as a defensive cutter. She previously played for University of Chicago, Chicago Gambit, and University of Washington Element. We are excited to have Rachel join our team of coaches this year!
Alicia Lagasca (Phoenix)– A$ captained the University of New Hampshire women’s team for 3 years, and played for Flaming Moe and Six Trained Monkeys before returning to the women’s scene to play for North Carolina Phoenix. She brings elite level club experience, as well as experience building and developing a college team to our coaching team. We are so glad to have her on board!
